The Government of Nepal has released a new "Common Commitment Paper" focusing on major tourism goals for the next five years. This plan was created by combining the election promises of six political parties currently in the House of Representatives.
The main goal of this plan is to increase the number of tourists, make them stay longer, and double the amount of money an average tourist spends in Nepal.
New Tourism Ecosystem and Major Destinations
The government wants to connect nature, culture, and local communities to create a new "ecosystem" for tourism. Key highlights include:
Religious Hubs: Major centers like Pashupatinath, Lumbini, and Janakpur will see big infrastructure improvements. The government also plans to promote the religious path from Devghat to Muktinath.
National Wellness Year 2027: The year 2027 will be celebrated as the "National Wellness Year" (Rashtriya Aarogya Barsha) to promote health and spiritual tourism.
New Destinations: Places like Salpa Silchung, Halesi Mahadev, Pathibhara, and Mukmalung will be officially developed as religious tourism centers.
Adventure and Mountain Safety
To make trekking and climbing more attractive, the government will launch the "Clean Mountains: Safe Climbing" campaign. They also plan to open more mountain peaks for climbing to attract adventurous travelers.
Additionally, the government wants to promote "Off-Season" tourism packages so that visitors come to Nepal throughout the entire year, not just during the busy spring and autumn months.
Aviation and Infrastructure Upgrades
One of the most important parts of the plan is improving air travel:
Airport Use: The government aims to operate the Pokhara and Bhairahawa international airports at full capacity. They plan to start direct flights from major cities around the world to these airports.
Safety Rules: The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) will be split into two separate bodies, one for providing services and one for making rules. This is expected to make flying in Nepal much safer.
Local Culture and Skills
The plan focuses heavily on local experiences. This includes:
- Promoting homestays that offer local food, traditional clothing, and handmade crafts.
- Running tourism and hospitality training programs at the local and provincial levels to create more jobs for youth.
- Working with the private sector to build new hotels, resorts, and eco-tourism projects.
By improving safety, marketing new destinations, and branding Nepal’s unique lifestyle, the government hopes to establish Nepal as a top-quality destination in the global travel market.
