Nepal Launches Online System for Foreign Vehicle Permits to Simplify Tourist Entry

Great news for road trippers! Nepal has launched an online system for foreign vehicle permits. No more long queues at the border, just fill the form, pay online, and show your QR code to enter.

The Government of Nepal has introduced a new online service to make it easier for Indian tourists and travelers from other countries to enter Nepal by road.

The Department of Customs, under the Ministry of Finance, developed this digital system. It allows foreign vehicles entering Nepal through land borders to fill out their details and pay the required fees online. Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Waglé officially launched the system during a special program today.

No More Waiting at the Border

Before this system, tourists bringing their cars or motorcycles into Nepal had to stand in lines at border customs offices to get a physical temporary permit (TIV). If they wanted to extend their stay, they had to return to a customs office or face heavy fines.

With the new online portal, travelers can now:

  • Fill out details from home: Declare vehicle information online before reaching the border.
  • Pay digitally: Make payments through online portals or bank counters.
  • QR Code Entry: Receive a QR code via email, which can be shown at the border for quick entry.
  • Easy Renewals: Extend the vehicle permit online from anywhere inside Nepal without needing to visit a customs office.

Focus on Good Governance

During the launch, Finance Minister Dr. Waglé stated that this move is part of the government's commitment to providing high-quality and fast public services. "We want to ensure that tourists face no difficulties at the border," he said.

Director General of the Department of Customs, Shyam Prasad Bhandari, explained that this digital transformation makes the entire process more transparent and efficient. Travelers can use the "TIV" module on the Department of Customs website to access these services.

Who Can Use This Service?

Currently, the service is available for tourists from India and third countries (such as Bangladesh) entering via land routes. While most road travelers currently come from the south, the department confirmed the system would also be available for tourists entering through Chinese border points in the future.

How to Access the Service

  1. Visit the official Department of Customs website.
  2. Go to the "Our Services" section.
  3. Click on the "TIV" (Temporary Import of Vehicle) link.
  4. Fill in the required details and make the payment to receive your digital QR code.
