Looking for a new getaway? Gufapatal in Ilam is officially in bloom! With thousands of flowers, a new view tower, and sights reaching as far as Darjeeling, it’s the perfect spring destination.

Gufapatal, located in Suryodaya Municipality-4, has become a colorful paradise this spring. The area is currently covered in thousands of blooming Angelia flowers, a species similar to the rhododendron, attracting tourists from across South Asia.

The main attraction is a large garden spread over seven ropanis of land, featuring a view tower and a beautiful flower bed. Visitors are often stunned by the natural beauty of the place as soon as they arrive. Sharda Subedi, a tourist from Pokhara, shared her excitement: "When all the flowers bloom at once, the place looks like a bright, decorated bride. I felt like staying there forever."

A View That Crosses Borders

Located at a high altitude, Gufapatal offers more than just flowers. According to Vijay Lawati, Secretary of the Gufapatal Tourism Committee, visitors come to see the sunrise and sunset, as well as the majestic Himalayan range.

From the view tower, you can see several districts of Nepal, including Ilam, Panchthar, Tehrathum, and Jhapa. You can also look across the border to see Darjeeling and Sikkim in West Bengal, India. Because of its location, the site is becoming very popular with tourists from India, Bangladesh, and Bhutan.

Getting There: Roads and Infrastructure

While the destination is beautiful, the journey can be a bit bumpy. There are about three kilometers of unpaved road left to reach Gufapatal from the Nepal side. However, work is moving fast. Ward Chairman Rai mentioned that 2,600 meters of the road have already been blacktopped, and once the final stretch is finished, the entire route will be smooth.

For now, travelers can reach Gufapatal in about 30 minutes from Fikkal after leaving the Mechi Highway. Another option is to travel through the Pashupatinagar border point via India, which offers a paved road all the way to the market near Gufapatal.

Natural and Sacred Surroundings

Local leaders emphasize that Gufapatal’s charm lies in its untouched nature. "There is nothing artificial here; everything is natural," says Chairman Rai. "The cold breeze, the scent of the flowers, and the views are what bring people here."

The area is also culturally significant. It sits right on the border, near the source of the Mechi River. Local residents have protected this border for years and often perform religious ceremonies at the river's starting point to honor the sacred water.
